夏休み

お久しぶりです。セージのプリスクールが４月末に終わりました。９月まで４ヶ月間の夏休みです。メイとセージを二人とも家で面倒をみる生活にやっと慣れてきたところです。以前はメイが昼寝をしているときに家の片付けなどをしたものですが、セージがいる今はそうはいきません。ソーイチは毎日散らかった家に帰宅しなくてはいけません。でもベッドタイムになるころには大抵片付いています。週末が終わるころにやっと、なんていうこともありますが。：）

問題はどうやってこの夏を楽しくやり過ごすか、ということです。近所のウォーターパーク「Wild River Country」の季節パスを手に入れ、それからプレイグループへ行ったりもしています。近く図書館で「夏の工作」が始まりますが、それにも行く予定です。子供が大きくなるにつれて子育ては簡単になるかと思っていましたが、簡単になるのではなくて、それぞれのステージごとに違った難しさを持っているのですね。この夏なにか出来ることを助言していただける人がいましたら、どうかメールをお送りください。

It's been a long time....sorry. Sage's last day of preschool was on April 30. He has summer vacation until the last week of August--a 4 month break! It has taken me a while to get used to the new routine of having both him and Mae in the house all day. I used to take time to clean when she would nap, but Sage's doesn't sleep in the daytime so that doesn't really work for me anymore. Poor Soichi comes home to a very messy house everyday. By bedtime everything is usually back in a somewhat organized fashion, or at least by the end of the weekend. :)

The problem that faces me now is finding ways to make their summer fun. Luckily, we got a season pass to Wild River Country, a local water park. I have gone to playgroup a few times on Fridays and I'm planning on visiting the library when they start all of their summer crafts on Tuesdays and Thursdays; they last about an hour. I thought as the children grew parenting would be easier, but I'm finding that no stage is easier than another, just different. They all have their ups and downs. Any suggestions on what to do with the rest of our time? Email me...PLEASE.

ディズニーワールド旅行

家族旅行にディズニーワールドへ行ってきました。とっても楽しかったです。セージはホテルに滞在したり、アトラクションに乗るのが大好きでした。「宇宙」や「日本」が好きなセージは、未来ワールドや日本の建物があるエプコットが一番気に入っていました。「日本」のコーナーでは彼と一度夕食を食べたのですが、その後で日本の建物をみてセージが「ババとジジはあそこにいるよ」と話していました。

でも彼が一番気に入っていたのはウォーターパークへ行くことでした。スライダーを楽しんで、メイもウォーターパークが気に入っていました。子供用の水深の浅い場所があって、周りの物によじ登ったり、水遊びをして楽しんでいました。

メイは朝起きると、真っ先にストローラーまで這って行って、自分でよじ登って座っていました。早く行こうって言っているようでした。彼女はパーク内の人ごみや大騒ぎが大好きでした。彼女のお気に入りは「It's a Small World」のアトラクションでした。帰ってきた今でも、あの曲を歌うと微笑みながら一緒に歌おうとします。とっても可愛らしい！彼女がひとつだけ気に入らなかったのはパークのあちこちにいるコスチュームを着たキャラクター達でした。とても怖がっていました。それから大きな音がする花火も嫌いでした。でも赤ちゃんにしては私達が想像したよりもとてもよくやってくれました。いつも笑顔でいっぱいでした。

ディズニーワールドから帰ってきたときは、セージが泣き出してしまいました。どうしたのか聞いたら、「アーカンソーが怖い」っていうので、どうしてか聞いたら「ホテルに帰りたい。ディズニーワールドが僕の家」っていうのです。私もそこに残りたかったです。

We went to Disney World for a family vacation during the first week of May. We had so much fun! Sage loved staying in a hotel and riding the attractions. His favorite theme park was Epcot because he loves space and also because he loves Japan. He wanted to visit the Japanese section a lot. I ate at a restaurant there with him one night. After that he looked at a building in the Japanese section and said, "Baba and Jiji are in there."

But his most favorite thing to do was to visit the water parks. He loved the water slides. Mae really enjoyed the water parks as well. They had areas for babies that were very shallow. She liked splashing and climbing.

Every morning when Mae would wake up, she would crawl to her stroller and climb inside. She was always ready to go. She loves crowds and excitement. Her favorite attraction was "It's a Small World". If we sing that song now, she smiles and tries to sing along. It's very cute. The only things she didn't like were the characters in animal costumes--she was very frightened of them. And she did not like the loud fireworks. But she did so much better on the trip than we anticipated for a baby. She was always full of smiles.

On the way home from Disney World, Sage started crying. I asked him what was wrong. He said, "I'm afraid of Arkansas." I had no idea why he would be so and asked him about it. He said, "I want to stay at the hotel. Disney World is my home!" I wish I could stay there, too.

セージが新聞に

数週間前、近所の図書館の「Eggstravaganza」というイベントへ行ってきました。復活祭でよく登場するウサギのぬいぐるみを着た「バニー」、様々なゲーム、顔の塗り絵、風船を膨らませて色んな形にしてくれる人、そして目玉の「たまご探しゲーム」をする春のお祭りです。 子供達はかごいっぱいにプラスチックの卵を見つけるのを楽しんでいました。卵にはたくさんの景品が隠されていて、殆どがお菓子なんですが、中には小さな紙切れが入っている卵があって、それがあると小さな福袋と交換できます。セージは全部で４０個近い卵を見つけました。 福袋の券も５枚も見つけたので、彼の友達に分けてあげました。

イベントでは新聞社のカメラマンが写真を撮っていました。セージが卵を探しているところを写真で撮ったので、セージの名前は何かと聞かれました。新聞に載るのかと期待していましたが、ソーイチはカメラマンが沢山写真を撮っていたのでセージの写真を使う確率は低いよ、と話していました。ところが、どうでしょう、復活祭の朝、セージの写真がアーカンソー州で一番有名な新聞社アーカンソー・デモクラット・ガゼットに載っていたのです。ソーイチ、メイ、私の写真も他の写真数枚に写っていました。不運にも数ヶ月前、この新聞の購読を止めてしまっていました。セージのプリスクールの先生が、新聞をくれました。ありがとう！

A few weeks ago, we went to our local library for an event called "Eggstravaganza". It was a spring party with the Easter bunny, games, face painting, a man making balloon animals, and egg hunts for young and older children. The egg hunts were the highlight. Children loved filling their baskets with the plastic eggs. The eggs had lots of surprises inside, mostly candy but some also had a piece of paper that could be traded for a bag of toys. Sage won over 40 eggs! He got 5 bags of toys, so we gave some away to his friends.

A photographer was taking pictures at the event. He asked me for Sage's name because he had taken his picture during the egg hunt. I was really excited, but Soichi told me that the man probably took many pictures and the likelihood of Sage's picture being published was slim. But, sure enough, on Easter morning, Sage's picture was in the Arkansas Democrat Gazette, the state's most popular newspaper. Soichi, Mae, and I were in the background in a couple of pictures, too. Unfortunately, we had just canceled our subscription the month before. Sage's preschool teacher gave this copy to us. How nice!

春休み

私の母はスプリングデール公立学校で図書館の司書をしています。今週は母の学校とセージの学校が両方とも春休みなので、今日は私の両親が家まで訪ねてきてくれました。セージはずっと楽しみにしていて、とても興奮しています。毎日のように「今日は水曜日？」って聞いていました。いつもおまけに「おじいちゃんは農家で、おばあちゃんは女性！」なんて言うのです。この写真は去年のクリスマスの後にとったものです。新しい写真を載せないといけませんね。

彼らが家に来ている間に、メイが歩き出しそうです。とても上手に立てて、周りのものをつかみながら歩く練習をしているようです。Such a big girl!

My mother is a librarian in a public school in Springdale. Both her and Sage's schools are on spring break this week so my parents are coming for a visit today. Sage has been anticipating it all week. He's very excited. He keeps asking me if it is Wednesday and he feels the need to always tell me, "Grandpa is a farmer and Grandma is a woman." These are pictures taken when they visited this past Christmas. Hopefully I'll have a few new ones to put up soon.

Maybe Mae will start walking while they are here. She stands so well now and she is trying to walk by holding on to things. Such a big girl!

Message in a Bottle

先週セージとディズニーの「レスキュー」を見ました。誘拐された女の子が、助けを求めるメッセージを空き瓶に入れて海に流し、それを見つけたネズミ達が彼女を助けようと立ち上がる物語です。セージはこの映画が大好きです。ねずみが出てくる映画なら大抵気に入るのですが、この冒険映画は特に大好きなようです。

今夜、ソーイチがソーダのペットボトルを会社から持って帰って来たのですが、空になった後、そこに手紙を入れて浜辺へ行き、川に流して良いかってセージが聞いてきました。川にゴミを投げるのは法律違反で、牢屋に入れられるかもしれないよ、と話しました。（本当に投獄されるかどうかは知りませんが、罰金を払わなければいけないということを上手く説明できなかったので・・。）彼によると、ペットボトルはリサイクルできるのでゴミじゃない、とのことです。かわいい言い訳でしたが、法律は守らなければいけません。

そこで代わりですが、セージが言うとおりに手紙を書いて、サインをさせ、丸めてボトルの中に入れ、それをバスタブへ持って行きました。彼がお風呂に入っている間、風呂の端を浜辺にまねて、ボトルをお湯に浮かべた後、反対側の端を別の浜辺にまねて、そこへ到達したら発見されたことにしました。ボトルを開けて手紙を取り出そうとしましたが、濡れていてなかなか出てきません。歯ブラシの助けを借りてやっと取り出し、丸まっていたのを伸ばしてメッセージを読みました。

A few weeks ago we watched Disney's The Rescuers with Sage. In the film, a little girl is kidnapped. She sends out a message of distress in a bottle, which is found by a group of mice who devote themselves to her rescue. Sage loved the movie. He likes pretty much any cartoon with mice but the adventure of this show really captivated him.

This evening, Soichi brought a soda bottle home from work. When the bottle was emptied, Sage asked if we could put a letter in it, go to the beach, and throw it in the river. I told him that it is breaking a rule to throw trash in a river and that we might get put in jail if we do. (I don't think we'd really get put in jail but I didn't think I could explain the process of paying fines to him very well.) He told me that a bottle can be recycled so it isn't really trash! I thought his argument was pretty cute, but it didn't change the fact that we still couldn't throw it in the river.

So we came up with an alternative. Sage asked me to write a message. He chose the words and then signed his name at the bottom. We rolled it up, put it in the bottle, and took the bottle with us to the bath. While he was bathing, he pretended the edge of the tub was a beach. After he let the bottle float for a while, he put it on the tub's edge. He then announced that he "found" a letter on the beach! We took off the bottle cap. Sage tried to make the letter come out by turning the bottle upside down and shaking it. But it wouldn't budge. The paper had gotten a little wet and was sticking to the sides of the bottle. With the help of the narrow end of a toothbrush, I pried the letter out. Then we unrolled the letter and read the message:

ダファデル

「ワイ」という町のダファデル祭りへ行ってきました。ワイは２０マイルほど南にある小さな町です。ダファデルは大学生の頃から私のお気に入りの花で、毎年春真っ先に花を咲かせます。大学生の頃はこのお祭りのことを知らなかったのですが、残念です。知っていたらきっと瞑想したり詩の本なんかを持って行ったのに。

この花畑、きれいだと思いませんか？小さな教会が所有しています。教会のメンバーが毎年ダファデルを植え、その花を売って神父の給料に使っています。

アーカンソー中部に住んでいる人たちは毎年沢山家族の写真などを撮りに６月までやってきます。セージとメイの写真が大好きです。花を３６本摘みました。１２本で１ドル。青いかびんに入れ、キッチンのテーブルに飾りました。球根も１２個買って、ソーイチとセージが庭に植えました。来年の春はダファデルが沢山咲くことでしょう！

We went to a daffodil festival in Wye this past weekend. Wye is a small town about 20 miles outside of Conway. Daffodils are one of my favorite flowers (one of the first flowers to bloom in spring); they were my very favorite flower when I was a university student. (It's too bad I didn't know about this place at the time! I would have loved walking in the area meditating or sitting with a book of poetry.)

Isn't this field of flowers gorgeous? It is owned by a small church. The members have planted these daffodils for many years and use the money they make from selling them to pay their pastor's salary.

Lots of people in the central Arkansas area come here to take family pictures throughout the month of March. I love the one of Sage and Mae. We picked 3 dozen flowers. They charged one dollar for a dozen. We placed them in a blue vase on the kitchen table. We also purchased a dozen bulbs. Soichi and Sage planted them in the front and back yards, so we will have lots of our own daffodils in bloom next spring!

里帰り

先週は家族揃って病気でした。ソーイチが数日、そのあと私、そしてメイ・・。でもセージは元気でした。そいう訳であっと言う間の一週間でした。

その前の週は、ここから北西へ車で３時間ほどのところにある田舎町のサイローム・スプリングスへ私の両親を訪ねて行ってきました。孫に会えなくて待ち焦がれてるって私の両親が言っていたので。居間や家の外で幸せそうにメイを抱いたりセージと遊んだりしていました。

それから私の９５歳になる祖母にも会いました。最近リトルロックからサイローム・スプリングスの近くに引っ越したのです。彼女もセージとメイに会ってうれしそうでした。妹のドーン、ドナと彼女の子供達皆でゲームをしたりして遊びました。

私の家族ほどゲームにかけては競争心の激しい家族はありません。家族でポーカーやボードゲーム等をして育ったのですが、昔の楽しい記憶を思い出します。でも残念ながら今回やったディズニーの雑学ゲームは全然勝てませんでした。 ディズニーの映画ならよく知っているかと思っていたのですが、実際のところ殆ど知りませんでした。この夏にセージとメイをディズニーワールドへ連れて行く予定です。セージができるだけ多くキャラクターを見分けられるように、今から有名なディズニーの映画をみさせておこうと思っています。

それから、私の祖先には先住インディアンの血が多いことを発見しました。私のヒイおじいさんの名前を見つけたのです。地元の図書館に毎週木曜日、先祖スペシャリストが来て、各家族の歴史的文書を見つける手助けをしてくれます。私の家族に関する情報を見つけてくれると良いです。

Last week, my family got sick--Soichi for a couple of days, then me, then Mae. Thankfully, Sage did not catch the illness at all. But still, 5 days flew by before I knew it and then the weekend came.

The weekend before we got sick, we visited my parents' home in a rural area outside of Siloam Springs, a town in northwestern Arkansas located about 3 hours from Conway. My parents told me they were suffering from grandchildren withdrawal. They needed their "fix"! They were extremely happy when they got to hold Mae and play with Sage in the living room and outside.

We also saw my granny, who is 95 years old and has just recently moved to that area from Little Rock. She really loved seeing Sage and Mae! My younger sister, Dawn, brought my granny to my parents home Saturday afternoon. Then my older sister, Donna, arrived with her husband and 3 children--Aryana, age 9, Luke, age 5, and Kade, age 4. We had games for kids and adults.

I forget how competitive my family is until we come together for a friendly spar. We grew up playing poker and board games during holidays so when we play them, they invoke a lot of fond memories for all of us. Sorry to say, I didn't do very well with the Disney movie trivia. I thought I knew a lot of Disney films, but apparently I am quite ignorant of the majority that have been made. We are taking Sage and Mae to Disney World this summer. Soichi and I are hoping to watch several popular Disney movies before then so that Sage will recognize the characters throughout the theme park and in parades.

I also discovered that I have a lot of Native American ancestry in my family. I found out the names of my great-grandparents. The local library has a personal ancestry specialist who comes every Thursday to help people find historical documents about their families. Hopefully, she can help us as well.
